Plans for Shabbat food

Current thoughts, anyway. Considering the produce I got, definitely steamed green beans (perhaps with some sesame oil and seeds) and baked winter squash. The acorn squashes will end up at Z's, since they'll be four adults, and I'll keep the carnival squash. That I can do tonight, and with the oven on, I should put something else in, either a fruit crumble (I think I might need more fruit for that, unless I put the kiwis in, which doesn't appeal) or some banana bread (there are aged bananas in the freezer to use up before this week's bunch). Either would work to bring to Z's. I'll make a larger batch of challah; she wants a large one with rolls. The other stuff to bring over is pretty easy, too: some lettuce and tomato for salad (including some arugula), turkey meatloaf, and some canned goods (tomato sauce that will be canned tonight, and a half-pint of honeyed figs with lavender (already made)). All the pareve stuff can be done tonight (tomorrow morning for the challah), so there shouldn't be a problem finishing the meatloaf and delivering it all before Shabbat. (Not only do I not know if the eruv will be up, but also this would be a bit inconvenient to carry a mile and a half.)
OK. Other food for me for Shabbat. Tomato salad with arugula and olives, possibly chickpeas. Since I have the oranges, possibly cranberry relish. And I got barley, too. Though perhaps that should become a slow-cooked oven dish, with barley under a turkey thigh instead of rice. I could put in onion, garlic, cranberries, orange juice, orange zest, and slivered almonds. Hm. I have carrots I could cook with orange juice, too. Two orange dishes is a bit much, though. Unless just the zest with the barley, maybe? And I'd need something a bit sweet to balance the tart of the cranberries. Or leave the orange with the turkey and add something else to the carrots. Dill? Maybe.
Still available: a medium head of fennel, two hot peppers, radishes (and greens), kiwis, and lots more tomatoes. *ponder*
Maybe put the diced hot peppers with honey in the squash?
Also, the ground turkey can be gotten at Trader Joe's, so need to figure out what else I need from there.

Date: 2005-09-16 11:56 am (UTC)Also done: the winter squash, and two banana-applesauce cakes. The challah is in the oven now on time bake.
The only thing left for delivery is a meatloaf. I decided to make two, just for ease of preparation. While it's cooking, make whatever side dishes are left (green beans, carrots, salad, cranberry relish, possibly barley).
