The Houston Chronicle ran a story today about a transwoman getting out of New Orleans who was later arrested for taking a shower (in what authorities deemed the 'wrong' shower). Help has already arrived, in more ways than one. She's now in a hotel, with her family, and is learning more about gender politics. The part I found sad was that although she'd already been living as a she for almost a year, in the last week or so this is the first time she's learned that she's trans, not gay.

Menino has made September 17th this year Curious George Day in Boston. I never knew that Fifi almost didn't make it out of Nazi Europe, to be renamed Curious George.

The era of the 10-digit ISBN is ending; the era of the 13-digit ISBN dawns.

Much thunder and lightning, noticeable even in my window-less cube. I wish I'd remembered my rain hat. And to close the porch door.

ETA The hot-tub and massage place did open in Inman (I'd heard advance rumors).

The current "Bookland" EAN, which is the 13-digit number just below a book's bar code, is actually the same thing as the 13-digit ISBN (notice that the Bookland EAN and the ISBN are the same except for the 978 prefix and the check digit). Although, in the future, some 13-digit ISBNs will start with 979 instead of 978.

We've started dual-numbering our copyright pages, but we're not going to dual-number our bar codes (we'll just switch to ISBN 13 when we need to).
