From a link Hrafn gave, I got to a site with paper plate folding. Check out the photo gallery to see some really pretty things. (Not quite origami, since some pieces use tape or bobby pins, but still very pretty, if a bit less satisfying for the extra materials.) I might need to get a zillion-pack of paper plates...

I got to see a couple of very cool math videos this weekend, thanks to Queue. Not Knot, Turning a Sphere Inside Out, and N is a Number. The first two had some impressive graphics, though for some reason I found them more helpful to understanding the math in the first one. The latter is a documentary, which was interesting, left me with a number of questions about Paul Erdos (more about his personal history than his mathematical achievements).

Alas for summer road work in Cambridge: the eruv is projected to be down for the next month or so.

The Tomato Bunny visited work, and I'm a Brandywine richer.

Last Friday I continued my quest for skirts* at Filene's and Filene's Basement. I hadn't realized that Friday was also the Basement's Running of the Brides (the Boston Globe's photo gallery; I didn't know people came in teams!). By the time I got there after work, people who'd lined up to get in had already left, so it wasn't completely crazed. Still, it was interesting to see how women had prepared. Some were in bike shorts and thin tank tops, while others just stripped down to their underwear to try on one of the forest of dresses. There were hundreds and hundreds of them, hanging high enough to clear the ground, so I could imagine being lost in a snow-covered pine forest, unable to see out.

*unfortunately unsuccessfully; this year's styles have beads or sequins (likely to come off in the first wash), and/or not a good shape for me, and/or not a good color for me. Perhaps the fifth store I try will have something simple...

I lost track of time while on the skirt quest, so I got home far later than I'd planned. Good thing it was just me for Shabbat... In the hour I had, I roasted salmon with mustard and marmalade, and put in a tray of veggies to roast as well (onions, zucchinis, and some carrots). Then I sauteed a bunch of other veggies still hanging around, including onions (of course), three farm peppers, three earsworth of corn kernels, and scallions. Once I turned off the heat, I added some diced tomatoes and a can of black olives (Yes, I know they're not the real thing. But I'm oddly addicted to their mild saltiness and squeaky texture.). I had rolls, watermelon, cheese, some rich yogurt (much more like pudding than anything else, actually), and cookies around, too, so making just these three dishes carried me through Shabbat, though with an unfortunate lack of leftovers.

Side note: I'd forgotten just how lovely cold watermelon is on a hot day, even having to stand over the sink to spit out the seeds.

Sunday was humid, and I was disinclined to apply heat to food, so I made a salad to bring to the bris. Two large cans of chickpeas (I wanted the mushiness of the canned kind), lots and lots of multi-colored diced heirloom tomatoes, scallions, lots of black pepper, two small diced pickling cucumbers, and yet another can of black olives, plus some olive oil.

I had some leftovers of the salad, so this morning I made some pasta, adding mozzarella and a bit of cheddar as soon as I'd drained it. Once the cheese had melted, I added the rest of the salad, more tomatoes (just in time for tomorrow's projected infusion), and some basil. Yum. Though I admit that it may have tasted better because I never did get around to having dinner last night...
