mini food review
Trader Joe's Fruit Laces are long square prisms of fruit with some sugar and agar to hold them together. They're solid enough to bite into, but not sticky or hard to eat (unlike fruit leathers or gummi things). Plus there's the fascination of a South African hechsher, not something I see very much. I got the citrus ones, which are pleasantly tart, and I'm finding them rather addictive.

Happy Chinese New Year. Welcome to the year of the rooster. Google has a logo change today, though when you mouse over, it says it's for the "Lunar New Year," which seems rather inaccurate to me, since there are a number of other lunar calendars out there (Jewish and Muslim ones spring to mind) that celebrate new year's at a different time.

survey says
The postal service sent out a survey, using Gallup to find out how they're doing. I found it interesting to see that their five answer choices for most questions were "excellent", "very good", "good", "fair", and "poor". Which means that the middle answer, usually a neutral, is automatically "good". Perfect for positive stats for them. Hmmm...

crustacean escape
Saturday night I got to watch as the live lobster put on the scale at the fish counter slowly but surely managed a break for freedom as the couple and clerk were engrossed in the task of picking out a second sea insect. It slowly crawled up, over the lip of the scale, then fell down to the counter and onto the floor. She of the couple shrieked. He of the couple calmly picked it up and put it back on the scale. One lobster's bid for freedom failed.

I've been noticing that for the past few days; seems like just about everyone's doing that.

(Although, strictly speaking, the Jewish calendar isn't lunar; it's a lunar/solar hybrid.)

Even granting the Jewish calendar being a hybrid (though I think for most people the fact that it's based on lunar months is enough to be 'lunar' for them), there's still the Muslim calendar, which is used by a huge number of people.

And in this pc, multicultural world, too.
