It's amazing how much difference five degrees make.

Not that you care about my opinion, but I think you are correct. If you are increasing the heat by a unit or chunk of five degrees, then you are basically dealing with a collective singular, and the correct conjugation is "makes." If you are dealing with each degree as a separate entity, then the conjugation is "make," but that's not what [livejournal.com profile] magid's usage would indicate.

I debated make/makes before posting. I thought of "Five degrees make a difference", and that sounded right, so thought this was ok. If not, well, chalk one up to exhaustion.

It is my opinion that Magid posted correctly.
