We now distract you from the frustrations of the game with a list of very calm vegetables. Oh, and fruits.

  • a half peck of apples, many of them Delicious (no longer my favorite variety)
  • a bunch of kale
  • a large leek
  • four largish carrots (a pound?)
  • five red onions
  • a mini-pumpkin
  • a carnival squash
  • two beets
  • about ten potatoes (a couple of pounds)
  • an acorn squash

With all the apple inundation, I've been making applesauce. First it was apple-pear sauce, the remains of which were canned (a pint and two minis). Last night it was cran-rhubarb applesauce, which I think is quite excellent (four pints canned). And tonight, using Bbbsg's suggestion, it was gingered applesauce (three pints in the canner). It starts appley, and ends with the heat. Yum. There's still enough apples for another batch, and cinnamon's sounding far too run of the mill now. Other ideas?

Frustration? Only if you're a Yankees fan!

Temporary frustrations, apparently brought on by a particular change of pitchers. Or at least, that's what I gathered from my friends page...

True, true. My bad. :)

Would apple work with some sort of chili or pepper? Maybe an apple-Serrano combination? I suppose that's the sort of thing that could either be really interesting or really disgusting.

Maybe. I don't know. Somehow, the combination doesn't appeal. Mango and pepper, peach and pepper, sure. But apple and pepper doesn't fit my mental mouth nearly as well.

I have never liked "delicious" apples. Its a misnomer. They should call them "mealy and tasteless".

I think they're bred to look good, without regard for actual taste. Every once in a while I used to get one that was good, but wading through all the ones that weren't isn't worth it when there are such reliably excellent apples around.

Between the name, the exterior, and the interior, it's an apple designed by marketers.

They're an older variety, so this is a little weird :). I think perhaps it represents a lack of imagination by the old apple growing consortium. Golden Del are ok, tho.

I Googled to find the history of Delicious apples* (purported, at least), and it's definitely an older variety. The story points to it being a hardy tree; maybe that was tweaked to be better, to the detriment of the apples? Or maybe it's just that they don't store/ship well. Strange.

Side question: I wonder why there are so many kinds of apples (with such interesting names; I wish there were a site with lists of them), but not, say, peaches or pears?

*whoever wrote the page decided that 'bared' was the correct past participle of 'bear'. Ugh.

google provides this: http://www.applejournal.com/useall01.htm
for "apple variety list"

And this is one of the top hits for "peach variety list"
http://www.ces.uga.edu/pubcd/c741-w.html#Variety

I also had a brochure here recently on pears. There are varieties of *Everything* it's just that normal stores don't usually carry many, or bother to tell us which ones.

You can pick peaches locally in September. Ee should go next year! Fresh-from-tree peaches are the only ones I'll eat.

Thanks for the pointers.

I know that there are different kinds of pears and peaches, but even with the varieties I've seen, there seems to be practically an order of magnitude more varieties of apples.

I've never been peach-picking. Next year... (as long as the Jewish holidays don't devour the orchard visiting season).

If you're looking for non-canning options, apples work well in curries with chicken and onions. Hmm, now that I've said that, I have an idea for Shabbat. :-)

That does sound good. My first thought is to tinker with it and add lots of garlic, too. Hmm... not sure if I have time/ingredients to make this for Shabbat.

Canning is just my way to try to cope with apple inundation; half a peck of apples is far too many for me to consume in a week.
