I've had a Tuesday subscription to shows at Brandeis for years (7? 8? I'm not sure). When I started, there were eight shows a year, including a new play by someone in the playwriting program, and a Shakespeare play. Often one of those shows was by a visiting group, doing something more musical or more movement-al than the department handled (a revue of Cole Porter songs, or a dance performance). The rest featured the graduate theater folks, not only actors, but set designers, costumers, etc. For a while, there were extra shows while they hosted a regional college theater competition.

It's become harder for them to finance so many shows, it seems. Last year, there were six shows. And then I got information about subscribing for the coming year, and I'm sore disappointed. There are now only five shows, and they've revised the schedule so there are no longer either Tuesday or Wednesday performances, nor Sunday evenings. Instead, the show opens on Friday, and runs through the following weekend's Sunday matinee. I'm not pleased; Tuesdays had worked well for me. I'm no longer working a couple of exits away, but Tuesday is still easier. And there's no longer a new play. I called to find out why, and it's because they've eliminated the playwriting program entirely. What a loss! I've seen some wonderful new plays over the years.

In the end, I decided to re-up for this year, but if it's a lackluster year, I may not continue after. There's a lot of good theater that's much easier to get to...
