Improv dinner
Aug. 26th, 2004 09:32 amI just got ground turkey last night, and wanted to use it, but otherwise wasn't sure what to make for dinner. Meatloaf? Burgers? Not sure.
I started sauteeing onions and garlic, which gave me time to think about what else I had in the house. Strangely enough, I didn't use any of the vegetables I'd just picked up. Instead, I added the ground turkey to the onions and garlic and browned it a while. I ground black pepper over it, then added half a preserved lemon, diced fine. Next was a can of tomato puree, and another of black olives. Just before serving, I added a bag of fresh spinach to wilt in the heat of the rest.
I was very pleased with this, since it turned out to be what I was in the mood for, and simple enough to pull together. Next time I might add some pine nuts, or chickpeas (or use chickpeas instead of the meat). [Note to self: it's easier to remember you have preserved lemon if you put them somewhere you'll see them.]
Process note: I usually write posts in email first (lest LJ eat them). I'm still getting used to Lotus Notes at work (with its forced 9.5 point font, very hard to read), which I think has also kept me to posting at home (well, until now). Oh, compounded by getting used to using Safari at work, too. I wish I were more (flexible? adjustable? Neither seems quite right.)
