There were a couple of girls at the airport who weren’t walking, but rolling. I looked, and they were wearing sneakers. Sneakers with wheels in them, fitted in the sole so they look about normal. They seem to be called Street Flyers, but I also saw sites that mentioned “walk and roll” (groan). Why do we need this?

Opinion: "china doll" or "china head doll"?

Good news for DWJ fans: according to Neil Gaiman’s blog, there’s going to be a movie of Howl’s Moving Castle. (Here’s a trailer.)

Cute kid on the T Sunday, a little girl who quietly looked around at people until it was time to get off the train, when she waved and said "Goodbye, train!" a number of times.

Reality TV is getting stranger: now both ABC and Fox are going to have wife swapping shows, Wife Swap and Trading Spouses, respectively. The vague descriptions imply that the shows don’t include sex or anything like that, but really, how far will it be from viewers’ thoughts?

A geometry challenge in the life of a vet… death tetris. (possibly too grisly for some)

Google likes "china doll" (136,000 hits) over "china head doll" (1,970 hits), and so do I.

Your links are broken... looks like there's an extra, strange double quote around the URLs.

Fixed, thanks.

(That's what I get for composing in Word when Outlook's down.)

Street Flyers: Oh, I dunno, sound like fun :) And a compromise between having to carry sneakers with you when you're rollerblading.

China doll.

It was odd, watching how the girls moved. An almost-step to get themselves rolling, then careful alignment of legs for rolling. It looked like walking didn't work so well, though. For rolling, definitely fun, though with the wheels so embedded, it'd be hard to work up any speed. In other words, cool idea, but from what I saw, neither walking nor rolling works as well as I'd want it to.

Well, the wheels snap up into the soles if you just want to walk on them, though I do wonder how well that works, too. If I ever see a cheap pair at a thrift store, I think I'd give them a go :)

I suck at walking in platform shoes, which may bias me...

When I was 12 or so, I knew a girl a couple years younger who had a pair of clog-like things with embedded wheels. They didn't retract, though.

I wonder how the girl would've dealt with Cambridge sidewalks!

I only ever saw her wear them inside, on a hardwood floor.

Shoes the likes of what you describe were used in the Steve Martin movie, LA Story, in 1991. I've always had a hankering for a pair, and knew about Street Flyers for several years now, but have yet to purchase a pair.

I don't remember seeing LA Story. *puts it on the ever-growing lists of movies to see*

If you end up getting some Street Flyers, I'd love to hear first-hand experiences wearing them.

Maybe they got more traffic than they were anticipating, and it'll show up again in a couple of days. I can hope, anyway.

According to the blog, it's a movie that'll be close to the book. Having just seen the Disney The Black Cauldron, I can appreciate a movie taking more than a couple of character names and an oracular pig (even if too small) from the original.
