I bought another lavender plant Wednesday, a complete impulse buy at Russo's. It's big, and the flowers are just starting, so it looks like butterflies are landing.

As for the other denizens of the porch... the big news is that I have tomato flowers! Yay! Two of the plants have some flowers blooming, and buds as well. Since they're small tomatoes, perhaps this means I'll have tomatoes by early July! (*eager anticipation*). The spinach, on the other hand, is not doing well. I don't know what it doesn't like, but it's not flourishing. Also, one of the basil plants died. Other than that, the leafy things are growing nicely, with the arugula (arooooooogula!) sending up a flower stalk already.

Last night I roasted a chicken (stuffed with lemons, over a bed of onions, sweet potato, peach, and nectarine). Between that and the chicken salad the night before, I'm ready for milchigs [1]. So for Shabbat I'm making a puff pastry tart with farmer cheese, arugula, tomatoes, caramelized onions, and black pepper. I think I should have a green herb in there as well, but haven't figured out what. Not only does it suit my mood, but it uses up a number of things I have lying around, which is always satisfying.
[edit: Oops, I forgot that the puff pastry sheets come in twos, and I didn't have enough farmer cheese or arugula to fill a second one. I debated a sweet dish (peaches or nectarines), but savory won out. So it has chipotle cheddar topped with roasted eggplant and red pepper, more grape tomatoes, and the last of the caramelized onions.]

Along with that I have artichokes (well, I steamed them last night), multi-grain challah rolls (with a longer second rise, to see if it turns out as puffy as the cherry-cinnamon bread from the Venus transit), salad, and a rhubarb-cherry crumble, which has just the right amount of tartness for my taste. It's amazing how much more dedicated cherries are than beets to turning whole kitchens magenta....

Hrm. I still have some broccoli, red peppers, and mushrooms I should do something with. Perhaps sautee them with an onion. ...My last onion, as it turns out. I can't believe I'm at the end of the onions! My house is officially Not Prepared without onions! I wonder when I'll have time to remedy the situation if I don't dash out before Shabbat.

It's when you take the farmer and let him age well.

A rather crumbly dry-ish curd cheese, I believe. Somewhere between feta (and not salty, since not brined) and cottage cheese/ricotta cheese (depending on brand).
