Two years ago, the eruv wasn't up for Somerville Open Studios, though there were rumors.

Last year, it was on hiatus while they revamped the border to be easier to maintain.

And I just got an email that the eruv will be down this week due to a (relatively) permanent fence being down for street paving.

I thought this year I'd finally be able to walk around with water and a map....
Sigh.

L'shana haba'a.

On the up side, there will be water and maps available at many of the stops, anyway... BTW, are you allowed to carry things you can hold in your pockets? (Yes, I know I'm a bad Jew for not knowing these things, but believe it or not, that level, of detail simply never came up in my 10 years of Yeshiva. Maybe because (so I gather -- I never even heard the term until I met you) of the big eruv around NY?)

No use of pockets. She could (before Shabbat) draw the map on her forearm (or a T-shirt that she'll wear) if she chose, and then consult it as necessary on Saturday, but she can't carry it in a pocket. Likewise, she can stop for a drink of water anywhere, but she can't carry a cup or bottle while walking.

I know there will be water and other snacks around, and maps to check, but it's nice to be able to take stuff with (and to glug water in large quantities when I choose, which isn't feasible with the little cups that tend to be put out).

No eruv => no carrying, nothing in pockets (well, I don't think anyone is hyper about getting lint out of pockets...). Anything you wear is ok. Anything else, not.

How about a stillsuit (http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/content.asp?Bnum=42)?

*grin*

I don't know; I suspect that would require asking a rabbi, considering the technology involved.

Of course -- I was just trying to look at the bright side. Sheesh. :)

We'll be sure to keep an extra large drinking container on hand just for you. :)

Currently?
Unfortunately, I'm currently lacking pocketses. Darned girl-clothes.
Somehow I suspect girl-hobbitses have pocketses, though. *Plus* they don't have to deal with footgear.
