It was one of those old typography-genre films. There were some older, traditional fonts working through their regular workdays, when a brash, newer font ripped through, shooting and looting. Of course, the theme music for this scene was "I shot the serif".

We interrupt this post to remind readers that most sans-serif fonts are completely law-abiding, and the actions of a few should not reflect on the many solid, sober, sans-serif fonts working tirelessly in books and web pages across the world.

Letters are so impressive, being so gymnastic (think of the balance required by every T, never falling over at the beginning of a sentence), mentally focused (I have yet to see an i that has wavered in concentration and let its dot drop, all the while managing to appear correctly in all sorts of words), and reflective (H, for instance, has both horizontal and vertical axes of symmetry), among all their other qualities. Oh, and let's not forget the shyness of Q, who made an appearance here anyway.

Anyone remember that 70s dance master, Sheik Yerbutay?

I think you need to see Behind the Typeface: Cooper Black

http://cheshiredave.com/mastication/2002/07/0037a-btt.html

(It's a flash animation in the style of the VH-1 "Where are they now" shows)

Interesting...

(Probably more so if my machine had a working sound card. Phooey.)

I also liked the sidebar:
Mastication is normal.
Chew the new.
Digest the past.
(etc.)

No sound?? Oh, you should really find a machine with a sound card to watch it on!

You were so right! It's so funny with the sound!

Don't forget the heartbreak of dealing with the widows and orphans in those movies. After all, you can't live on Bodoni sandwiches forever.
