I heard Molly Ivins speak tonight at the Cambridge Y. I hadn't read any of her stuff, but I suspect I'm going to; she's an impressively astute political observer, not to mention hysterically funny on stage, incredibly good; she could be a stand-up comic. She started with anecdotes of Texas politics, and continued to national politics. In the Q&A session, there was more discussion of the Democrats running for the presidency, the war in Iraq, the quest for redistricting in Texas, and the California recall election (which led to the best line of the evening (a tough call, indeed): "Schwartzenegger looks like a condom stuffed with walnuts.").

There was a brass band standing outside the Y, playing "Deep in the Heart of Texas" when I got to the Y. The place was packed, and overwhelmingly female, women who are no longer young, though many aren't yet old, either. There was at least one certifiably old woman there, though, Granny D, the 93-year-old who walked across the States. She's going to do another trip, stopping at workplaces to register people to vote (more info at grannyd.com).

PSA: There's going to be a women's health day fair this Saturday, from 10:30 am to 3 pm at 119 Windsor St., Cambridge. They list a variety of workshops, screenings, massages, etc.

The flyer is a bit poorly worded: "All women and their children are welcome" implies that any guy who gets his mom to bring him can get in.... I don't think they meant it that way.

Meme-age: Describe me in a + bi words, where b is nonzero.

Cat-woman lives in Delaware; I saw Delaware plate MEOWW on the Mass Pike this afternoon.

I'm on vacation next week, and other than Yom Kippur, haven't settled on any particular plans. Some ideas include apple picking (even if it is after Rosh Hashana), exploring the Charles River Museum of Industry and the Construction Site toy store in Waltham, getting a facial, and climbing Mt. Monadnock. I'd love any suggestions for other things to do reasonably locally.

Hooray for October!

You didn't say a had to be nonzero.

A deliberate choice :-)

Of course, now all I can think about is the Calvin and Hobbes strip where he's taking a quiz, and the question is to explain (something or other) in his own words. He does.

Spladiphonic

Ah, but a is obviously nonzero here:

Spladiphonic, adj.

(1) Sounding like a nail used in a windchime, from spad,
a nail one or two inches long, of iron, brass, tin, or tinner iron, with a hole through the flattened head, used to mark stations in underground surveying. Over time, spadiphonic gained an L, in an attempt at onomatopeia.

(2) The sound of spreading, from sprad, an obsolete past participle of spread. Spradiphonic became spladiphonic in that famous R to L shift that happened in the early 1300s.

(3a) The sound of a hart or stag three years old, from spaid.
(3b) Also from spaid, the sound of a castrated man or beast. Spaidiphonic became spladiphonic due to confusion with the word splayed.

;-)

Don't forget:
(4): Sounding like embers (a soft crackling sound, I believe) from Greek splêdos, embers + phonos, sound. Mistranscribed from Rather Late Latin splediphonicus in the 17th century during an academic lecture.

Nice!

I haven't had the chance to hear that sound in a long time.... must remedy that soon.

Is "i" i, or is it just a variable?

And by the way, if you decide you want to go apple picking at some point, let me know. I would like to pick some apples for an apple wine. :)

i, as in the square root of negative one, imaginary in the extreme :-)

(Just typing the code for an italic i is kinda entertaining, for an editorial geek like me :-)

I'm likely to end up going midweek, during the work day (orchards seem to close between 5 and 6, and I don't have a hell of a lot of weekend time until far too late in the season), so I don't know whether it's convenient for working folks to join me.

However, if you tell me what sort of apples and how much, I'd be happy to pick some for you.

If you haven't gone yet -- I just back from a 3-day trip to Jacksonville -- I've been told that sour apples are the best for wine. I would need 24 lbs. Check out the recipe I would be using at http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/recipes.asp (scroll down to APPLE WINE (1) [Heavy bodied]). Anyhow, why don't you e-mail me to let me know what your plans are.
