I heard Molly Ivins speak tonight at the Cambridge Y. I hadn't read any of her stuff, but I suspect I'm going to; she's an impressively astute political observer, not to mention hysterically funny on stage, incredibly good; she could be a stand-up comic. She started with anecdotes of Texas politics, and continued to national politics. In the Q&A session, there was more discussion of the Democrats running for the presidency, the war in Iraq, the quest for redistricting in Texas, and the California recall election (which led to the best line of the evening (a tough call, indeed): "Schwartzenegger looks like a condom stuffed with walnuts.").

There was a brass band standing outside the Y, playing "Deep in the Heart of Texas" when I got to the Y. The place was packed, and overwhelmingly female, women who are no longer young, though many aren't yet old, either. There was at least one certifiably old woman there, though, Granny D, the 93-year-old who walked across the States. She's going to do another trip, stopping at workplaces to register people to vote (more info at grannyd.com).

PSA: There's going to be a women's health day fair this Saturday, from 10:30 am to 3 pm at 119 Windsor St., Cambridge. They list a variety of workshops, screenings, massages, etc.

The flyer is a bit poorly worded: "All women and their children are welcome" implies that any guy who gets his mom to bring him can get in.... I don't think they meant it that way.

Meme-age: Describe me in a + bi words, where b is nonzero.

Cat-woman lives in Delaware; I saw Delaware plate MEOWW on the Mass Pike this afternoon.

I'm on vacation next week, and other than Yom Kippur, haven't settled on any particular plans. Some ideas include apple picking (even if it is after Rosh Hashana), exploring the Charles River Museum of Industry and the Construction Site toy store in Waltham, getting a facial, and climbing Mt. Monadnock. I'd love any suggestions for other things to do reasonably locally.

Hooray for October!
