I stopped at the Butcherie this morning. I don't know what it is about that store, but every time I go in I find new and, ah, interesting products. This morning, I saw three different shelf-stable entrees. They looked like regular heat-up-in-oven (or microwave) boxed things, but when I looked closer, I found that they could be heated without any equipment at all: they have some iron and magnesium [something] in the packaging, and when you add the packet of salt water (included), it heats up the food in the box. Very cool. Very bizarre. Not so cheap either (and I was surprised that they had meat, dairy, and pareve meals).

I balanced poorly this weekend: I had a wonderful time with people, and almost no alone time. I forgot how much I need that time alone, to absorb, process, write, think. Sometimes just to be, too. By the end of the weekend my brain was spinning.

Still, it was a very good weekend in other respects. I got to see a movie and experiment with alcohol, and celebrate a friend's birthday with food, talk, innuendo, and silliness. I hope I was able to keep my exhaustion from turning into a problem; I think so, but perceptions of self are not always reliable.

I just checked, and I have almost three weeks of vacation time left. My company has a use it or lose it policy, so I'm going to take it. There are many local things I'd like to do, but if anyone has suggestions for daytime events or destinations, I'd be interested to hear.

Self-heating, shelf-stable meals? Sounds like fun to me, even if palatability may take second billing to technology. Where is this place?

Harvard St. in Brookline, between the intersection with Beacon and the intersection with Commonwealth.

The three entrees I saw were turkey with mashed potatoes, some kind of vegetable stew, and cheese ravioli in sauce. I don't remember the brand name, but they were shelved on the front wall, not far from the end of the deli case.
