Last night I finally browsed the new part of Cristina's, the spice/tea/chocolate/condiment shop they've opened next to the ice cream shop. First impression: things are rather pricey, but there is a large selection of reasonably hard-to-find items. I'm not sure I'd buy anything there I could get somewhere else. But... there seemed to be things I haven't seen anywhere else. Most notably, there were fermented black beans with a hechsher, something I'd wanted to try for ages, after reading about them in Home Cooking. From the ingredients, they're just black beans and salt; I'm curious how they taste (as an ingredient, not alone!). Other kosher things that triggered my radar were a bar of 71% dark chocolate made by some European company I'd not heard of before, a jar of huge capers (the size of small grapes)(just the curiosity factor), and garlic cloves pickled with hot pepper (I suspect both Queue and Hrafn would enjoy these). There were also many kinds of dried beans I've never seen before, which is intriguing.

This morning there was a piece on NPR about soccer player Beckham. The commentator described him more than once as a "metro sexual" (or perhaps it was one word, or a hyphenated word?). Apparently this has something to do with his being happily married yet willing to appear on the cover of a gay magazine, and (*gasp*) wear a sarong sometimes. The piece was interesting, but I was left wondering exactly what a "metro sexual" is. I checked dictionary.com, which had nothing (but did offer "trisexual" as a suggestion, then told me I'd have to log on for premium service to find out what that means.). A quick Google check didn't help. So... anyone who can tell me what this means? (bonus points for "trisexual")

I'd never seen a RI license plate featuring Mr. Potato Head before this morning.

Jamie Lee Curtis has two picture books out. I don't think of her as an author; I suppose I'll have to read them to find out if I'm mistaken.

Addendum: Odwalla has stopped production of Fresh Samantha.

One of my favourite word sites is http://www.onelook.com/ -- checking there on metrosexual, I found:

http://www.wordspy.com/words/metrosexual.asp

and

http://www.quinion.com/words/turnsofphrase/tp-met2.htm

It didn't find any match for trisexual, but did find one match for "trysexual", which it defined:

Trysexual is a neologism and a pun on bisexual. It is used as a humorous term for someone who will try any sexual experience at least once.

*hugs*

Thank you!

I wonder if the 'trisexual' dictionary.com cited is the same as 'trysexual'.
(*thinking about the people I know and wondering how many are 'trysexuals'...*)

Hrm. Well, I don't quite qualify, but I'll try ALMOST anything once, as long as it doesn't involve certain activities that I find unpleasent to even think about, let alone participate in.

Openminded to a fault, that's me.

At least now I won't be tempted to buy a Coke product in the guise of something healthy.

A Coke product by any other name...

Well, they're still going to be making Odwalla juice, which is presumably reasonably healthy.

Mmm.... garlic and hot peppers...yummy!

Interestingly enough, I encountered the term metrosexual for the first time this morning (and also in relation to Mr. Beckham).

He seems to be the popular example of the species.

Is that Cristina's (Christina's?) in Inman Square?

Yes.
I thought that they're h-free, though now that you write it out, I start to doubt myself...

A) Ok, I thought Christina's had been bought out by JP Licks. *confused look*

B) I know I have heard people in our group use trisexual, but I can't remember how they defined it.

C) I thought that Odwalla produced a product that competed with Fresh Samantha. And how could a product such as yummy and prolific fresh samantha be cancelled?

I guess it's more proper to say *confused post*

A) Denise's (in Davis) had been bought by JP Licks. Cristina's is still there in Inman, independent of chainery.
(Total side note: while on the Cape, I saw many ice cream places that were all one chain (I don't remember which... not JP Licks, nor Baskin Robbins, something in between for size.), and Bitty said that they'd all been little independent places just last summer.)

B) If you remember, let me know? I'm pretty curious at this point.

C) According to this article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (the first one that came up when I Googled),
"Odwalla, of Half Moon Bay, Calif., bought Saco, Maine-based Fresh Samantha three years ago for stock worth an estimated $27 million at the time. Coca-Cola then bought Odwalla in the fall of 2001."
And now they've decided that they'd rather market just one brand of juices, and the Odwalla line won.

:/ blech! Fresh Samantha packaging is much cooler...Odwalla is so boring. And it's depressing to know that EVERYTHING is turning into a monopoly and the illusion is that we have a choice. feh...as you say.

Oh, thanks for the clarification on the ice cream place. More evidence of monotony. blahblahblahblah

I'll try and remember to ask the right people when you are in the room. If nothing else, I can ask at bi camp. That may have been where I heard it in the first place.

Monopoly ice cream, etc

Cristina's and Tosci's seem to be independent still (though Tosci's does have a second location (though not one they took over), and supplies ice cream to a couple of places). I admit that I tend to prefer small chains over large chains, and independent stores to any kind of chain, if reasonably feasible. I hate how you can just buy the same products at cookie-cutter malls all over the country...
