Plant notes

The office plants are thriving.

• The basil is the tallest; an orker suggested it's better to cut off the tops, to force them to be bushier. Anyone have an opinion on this?
  
• The nasturtium is rather more vine than I'd expect, but has some buds I hope will open soon.
  
• The chives came back from complete death and are rather perky, though looking more like grass than chives to me.
  
• The red leaf lettuces (ruby leaf and red butterhead (I can so hear that as some junior high school insult...)) continue to be less red than the ones at home, but grow well other than that.
  
• And the Boston lettuces... well, they're almost as tall as the basil. It's rather like the leaning tower of lettuce. I've been harvesting leaves aggresively, but I don't know if I can take the top part off (before they fall over or something) without killing them, since they don't have little new leaves filling in where big ones were taken. Comments welcome.

The plants at home are doing pretty well, too, except for the lavender and rosemary I'd overwintered in my office; they seem not to like being outside very much.

• The nasturium here is much sturdier, but has fewer buds, and those just appeared in the last day or so.
  
• The French lavender is sporting some buds, too.
  
• The arugula (aroooogula!) is flowering, small yellow flowers that are apparently edible, though I haven't tried them yet. It's been a challenge to remember to harvest frequently enough, so the leaves don't get too bitter.
  
• The lettuces are very happy (and the red ones are actually red).
  
• The mint, oregano, lemon balm, chives, and new rosemary are also growing well. I think I'll make some mint lemonade soon (as long as it's warm enough).

I never did find a sungold cherry tomato plant, so likely I won't be tomato-izing on the porch this year. Ah, well.

Next Tuesday is the first farm share delivery. I wonder what greens I'll be getting...

[I have budding ginger now, too. I suppose I could plant it before it grows roots and shoots this time.]

Thanks for the lettuce advice. I just moved the more bolted ones into a bit less sunny part of the window, so perhaps that will keep them from much greater height.

If these do martian-ize, perhaps I shall have to get more lettuce....
