M'm.
That was on the side of a Campbell's truck I saw on my way to work this morning. What's that apostrophe doing there? I don't know.

Last night was a condo association meeting. Amazingly, the difference between total condo fees and total expenses last year was about $14. Not so good for building up a cushion to avoid future special assessments, but otherwise, quite good.

For JB: Gangster Teeth, part 2

Also in today's news, the bear isn't moving.

Despite looking half-dead (some orkers would say mostly dead), last week there were tiny purple flowers on the rosemary in my office. Astonishing, really.

Makes sense to me! I probably would have used more m's and a dash ( "That's what Campbell's soup is, mmm-mmm good.") but it's a perfectly good way to indicate a glottal stop. (http://www.sil.org/linguistics/GlossaryOfLinguisticTerms/WhatIsAGlottalStop.htm)
As used in, say, "G'Kar".

What hauntmeister said. Essentially, Mm has one syllable. M'm has two. G'Kar is an excellent example of this use, and one I didn't think of.

But the truck had two "m'm"s on it (before the traditional "good"), which would indicate two sorta connected m sounds, followed by another sorta connected m sounds.

Am I the only one who has not run into G'Kar before?

Interesting. Perhaps it is still to get the pronunciation across. "mmm" could be said with a starting M sound, kind of like a hum, whereas the Campbell's slogan is pronounced with a starting vowel, somewhere between "umm" and "emm". I'm sure there is a name for this, but I do not know what it is.

This would be much clearer if I were speaking to you out loud. :)

Actually, the truck had "M'm. M'm. Good." on the side (though the second period might have been a comma; I'm not sure). I would've written it as you did, or perhaps "mmm, mmm, good". The apostrophe feels a bit too abrupt for a situation where the sounds before and after it are the same, somehow.

Humm. Hummmmmm.

If the truck had two "M'm"'s on it, there goes my theory.
G'Kar is a character on Babylon 5. (http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/lurker.html)

Ah, a TV reference (from after the 80s).

Obviously, I should've been more specific in my original post. Four distinct m sounds started to sound more like some strange geekiness blossoming than their traditional '2 m's then a good' sort of slogan.

Maybe they were paid product placement money by the M&M people?

M&Ms, the perfect dessert after a dinner of Campbell's soup ("just like your mother used to heat")? Hmmm.

Today seems to be sponsored by the letter m.

I always hated it when Mom served warm M&Ms. They're supposed to melt _in_ your mouth, not on the plate. *sigh*

If they melt on the plate, you have evidence of having eaten a well-rounded (for color) plate of M&M salad...

M'm...G'kar....

Oh god, I just scared myself....

(you would be scared too if you watched Babylon 5)

But scared in that good way, right?

M'm...G'Kar...

and Lyta.

Definite M'm.
