Brunching Epiphanies
Jan. 6th, 2003 10:41 amImpressions from an epiphanistic brunch at Cthulhia's:
Always good to know that a friend has a totally filled sheep, and that there are street-worthy bunny slippers out there. [being told I don't have two elbows]
Boggle while sitting on a cloud, Digger(s?) while sitting on the floor, tho ugh I suppose that's appropriate.
Finding out why Bitty had not been quite as pleased as I had when I bought that bar of chocolate (I'd like to point out that I'd just finished the other one when this new one arrived).
Hugs and kisses and backrubs.
Gifts that reminded me how thoughtful my friends are, not to mention Real Art. Now I have to make popovers, and read books, and hang art, and...
Contributing a challah and champagne; enjoying not only waffles, but potato kugel still hot from the oven, and (later) gingersnap ice cream cold from the freezer.

Re: Popovers
Date: 2003-01-06 02:15 pm (UTC)Big popovers have more of the soft inside in them and that's where the flavor is. Holds more butter/jam/whathaveyou too. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the outsides, but too much crust can be a problem. We'll have to arrange a night for popover baking... maybe a Sunday sometime.

Date: 2003-01-06 06:55 pm (UTC)I hear about inside : outside ratio. Perhaps I shall experiment. Of course, that means I have to make the first batch. Sometime this week, perhaps...

Date: 2003-01-08 09:15 am (UTC)1/4 c. flour
1/4 c. milk/water/soy milk
1 egg
My mom would use 3x the basics to feed 4 people; that's about what I would make for two, which leaves plenty of leftovers :) This stuff is great as a cold snack later in the day.
Blend in blender (can be done otherwise, but I have been told blenderized is best).
Pour into pan which has had butter melted into it. The deeper the batter, the gooier the result, so depending on what you want, you can try it all in a big flat pan, or divided amongst smaller ones, etc.
Bake 20 min at 425? I'll have to check the temperature. They make the most incredible peaks and things while baking, which sadly deflat soon after removal from oven.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar and fresh nutmeg. Serve with jam.
Re: Popovers
Date: 2003-01-07 06:30 am (UTC)How strict is the current halachic authority on ovens?
We better pick a Sunday soon, the 19th is Arisia and the 2nd I'll be driving back from Joisey.
Re: Kosher stuff, Sundays
Date: 2003-01-07 08:36 am (UTC)Kosher stuff: Where heat (or spicy food) is involved, the history of the implements/pots/oven comes into play (with anything cold and nonspicy, as long as it's clean, it's ok). So whatever not-necessarily-kosher food was cooked in your oven previously would mean that the current food cooked in there wouldn't be kosher, either (this also affects the pans used). One solution is to kasher the oven (a pain unless it's a self-cleaning one) and use new pans. The easier solution for occasional kosher cooking is to double wrap all the food in some container. For ease of use and disposability, foil stuff works well. The theory boils down to: there are non-kosher cooties in this oven. They can bombard the outer layer of foil. This may infect the outer layer of foil with cooties, but doesn't transfer to the inner layer, so the kosher food in the inner layer of foil stays kosherfied.
(I know this isn't the best explanation...)
Re: Kosher stuff, Sundays
Date: 2003-01-07 09:52 am (UTC)I'm just waiting for them to say that since breathing is ingestion and smell is related to taste that smelling tref is in fact a form of eating tref so you shouldn't get within smelling distance of tref. Seriously, their logic should cover that twist at some point. I am almost (but not really) tempted to point it out to them to see if they'll actually do that.
If they do go that route within your lifetime will you follow that ruling? I am extremely curious.
Sunday the 26th would be good. My weeknights are taken by games night (monday), date night (tuesday), OPN/other stuff (wednesday) - and you have potluck (thursdays)
Re: Kosher stuff, Sundays
Date: 2003-01-07 10:16 am (UTC)Oh, and practically speaking, there's not really consensus enough within the variety of religious communities to innovate with new halacha.
The 26th works for me. Btw, depending on potluck location and tiredness, I don't always go. But since I don't always know location much in advance, this doesn't necessarily help.
