Homophones

I was sitting in my office, and heard two cow orkers next door talking. "It has to be basil." What? Herb identification? How could someone *not* know if something were basil? And then I realized she'd said "It has to be basal," and it was work after all.

random thought: why would homophobes necessarily be afraid of homosexuals and not, say, homophones...? (and if "homophones" means "sounds alike," why doesn't "headphones" means "sounds like heads"?)
