Winter farm share, distribution 9 of 11
Mar. 1st, 2023 06:28 pm- three pounds of white Bonita variety sweet potatoes (skin and flesh; from Red Fire Farm)
- three pounds of beets
- two pounds of smallish Yukon Gold potatoes
- two pounds of carrots
- a large bag of spinach
- two four-ounce containers of sprouts, one broccoli, the other a 'salad mix' of alfafa, china rose radish, and crimson clover (both from the Gill Greenery)
- a jar of tomato puree (swapped for more beets - I was a little too slow to get the extra white sweets in the swap box!)
First thoughts: the farm sent out a curried sweet potato and lime soup that sounds appealing; spinach salad with roasted beets, lots of sprouts, walnuts, feta; carrot-beet pickles; mashed potatoes with wilted spinach. It also feels like I want to get some bread and avocado to make avocado toast with lots of sprouts on top.
On the walk home, I heard some very loud avian cackling, which turned out to be turkeys. I saw them fly for the first time, and when that one landed in a leafless tree, I spotted five of them roosting (another two were still foraging in the grass on the other side of the street). I forget sometimes just how large they are; seeing one in the air reminded me sharply!
