The snow came as predicted, so the T closing at 3:30 and the governor banning vehicular traffic yesterday at 4 (other than emergency people, of course) turned out to be a good thing. It was interesting to see how quiet it got, rather like Shabbat in Jerusalem late at night, after people have come home from wherever they were visiting.

There's snow more than halfway up my dining room windows (partly from wind and drifting; officially, Cambridge got 26 inches). However, I didn't lose power.

When did they start naming winter storms? The blizzard of '78 is called just that, not some Disney character name. (Who let Disney name the storm, and why name a freezing winter storm after a fish, anyway?)

Last night and this morning, almost no one was out. By midday, it looked more like a Brueghel painting, if everyone were doing snow-moving tasks.

I walked to Union Square this afternoon, and the Artisan's Asylum-instigated snow event was in full swing, with a huge snowball fight. There was music (therefore dancing), and snow sculptures, ranging from the somewhat traditional snowmen to geometrically-pleasing snowdecahedrons to singularly-inspired dragons, dinosaurs, and faces sticking their pierced tongues out. And snow fights, lots of snow fights, including ambushes, occasional buckets of snow, and launching devices. Also some manly men who waded shirtless into the fray.

I wasn't surprised to see people walking in the street; the driving ban was lifted around 4 pm, and not all sidewalks were shoveled yet. I was surprised to see a number of cyclists out, even without studded tires. And there were a couple of people on cross-country skis, plus at least one on snow-shoes.

It is past time to get new boots that will handle snow. My Timberlands are not only old, but have holes, which makes them less than optimal. And snow pants might be worth considering too.
