Little/big?

I remember when I was young dreaming of living in a very small, cozy (hobbit hole?) sort of place, just the minimum (where I thought I'd put my books is unclear). Or of living in some grand house, with room after room, rather like an English country manor (this no longer appeals as a way of life, though I wouldn't mind a visit sometime). I realized the other day that I never thought about regular houses, probably because they were what I and most everyone I knew lived in, so where was the romance, the excitement in that? Though in my more realistic moments, I knew I had enough stuff, or would as an adult, that I'd want more than the tiniest space (heck, just the kitchen stuff doesn't fit into an apartment with a galley kitchen), so I designed an octagonal semi-underground south-facing house with an atrium to allow light through most of it while getting the benefits of more regulated temperature and protection from the elements. (As if that were any more likely to happen.)

Brought to you because WebUrbanist featured a bunch of little freestanding offices/guesthouses, all of them interesting in some way. If only I had a yard of my own....
(eta 1015 And a few more cute tiny spaces: a tiny house blog and a lovely almost hobbit hole made by a competent non-professional in Wales.)
