Non-money economies, and a few links

This is a fascinating article by David Graeber, On the Invention of Money – Notes on Sex, Adventure, Monomaniacal Sociopathy and the True Function of Economics. It's a fairly lengthy discussion with some fascinating ideas. The one that caught me most was that non-money economies are not barter based, except for certain specific sorts of circumstances (distance trading, for instance), as has been shown by anthropological research. Whether it's potlatches or other sorts of gift giving with reciprocity implied, to be able to be part of society, it's not about money, and the assumption of economists that once there were specializations, there were goods that were bartered, which lead to the rise of money, merely shows the limited imagination (and understanding) by economists, in commodotizing everything always. It made me think about Burning Man; I know that a gift economy can't work within a larger money-based economy, but it seems closer to some form of traditional than I'd originally realized.

I know I tend to prefer what I'm used to in online sites, but really, LJ's new comment style is unpleasant. The colors are too pale to anchor space well (in my view), I miss the ability to add a title even if I didn't use it all the time (they couldn't just leave that as an option, and if it weren't used, not add the space for it once posted?). And I really really hate how my lack of icon now shows up as a blue faceless thing, rather than just my name. I suppose I'll have to go the 1x1 clear pixel route now to avoid that, which is fracking annoying. And if I have a style that uses a serif font to view my friends page, why would I want a sans serif font for viewing the comments?!

PS. Anyone know if there's an S2 style that looks just like the (old, classic, whatever ancientness) S1 style? Or how I can make sure that all my fonts have serifs? (Not seraphs, though :-).

(Side note: I find it interesting that both frack and frell start with fr, not just f, and they've both caught on in certain circles. The consonant blend seems to make it a more solid fake expletive, somehow.)
