I had some contract work that had me in an air-conditioned space during the day (well, mostly; some days the AC wasn't working so well) until today, which was of course predicted to be the hottest day yet (absolute and heat index). Great. My body isn't designed for heat; cold is so much nicer. But summer has its compensations, particularly the far share and fresh produce in general. And I hadn't been able to deal with this week's share before (finishing out that contract a day early, but with hours over the original contract, ie I'd crammed too many work hours into not enough days, part of why I couldn't manage to do much other than work). So somehow, I ended up in the kitchen this morning, not even particularly early. What got made: a tray of roasted potatoes, eggplant, and onion; a tray of roasted zucchini, eggplant, onion, garlic, and basil; basil muddled with a touch of garlic, salt, and olive oil (then frozen); not-quite-a-stew with onion, garlic, lacinato kale, carrots, scallions, and pickled hot peppers and their juice; corn and tomato salad with feta. Most of the farm share things have been prepared: all I have left is two small eggplant, half a head of lettuce, a head of radicchio, and some dill.

And then it was time to leave the kitchen. The ceiling fan in the living room doesn't make it that much cooler (it's over 90F), but having air moving helps me enormously. (Damned humidity.) And at least I was no longer actively dripping... I'm assuming at some point I'll succumb to the attractions of frozen desserts; I've found a new favorite ice cream flavor in the Trader Joe's lemon and ginger snap, which is all I have in the house right now. I should get sorbet; it's more appealing in the heat, being cold yet... thinner, somehow. Oh, hey, I think I've got some fruit in the freezer; that would be a good substitute.

Today's goal is to make it to the Garment District to use a Groupon that expires on Sunday. I suspect it might get deferred to Sunday if I really can't handle all the sunlight. For me, it's not just the heat, but the light: I'm more prone to sunstroke than the average person, unfortunately. (Heck, the idea of going out at all, even just to get to the car, or the library a few blocks away, is pretty unappealing right now.)
