I saw a Waltham-based cab on the highway from the company Smurfs Transportation. Their web site is SmurfsTrans.com, which lead me to think of the peculiarities of Smurf society; perhaps Smurfette is really trans, and Smurfs are all born bio-male? (Which leads to questions of replication (parethenogenesis?), and how Smurf medicos would have the technical skills to do the necessary operations, especially when the result is not found in nature (as it were), among others.) Perhaps I'm over-thinking things...?

I picked apricots, red currants, gooseberries, and raspberries in a friend's yard, but didn't have the energy to do anything more than a batch of mixed-fruit jam (or possibly fruit in their own syrup; I'm not sure it gelled particularly well), where a batch ended up being three half-pints and a mini jar. While the huge canning pot was hot, I also canned a pint of garlic scapes pickled with dill and sweet onion. And since that required warm brine, I dealt with the pounds of cucumbers from last week's share, starting a lot of fridge pickles (hot brine over sliced cucumbers, along with garlic, black peppercorns, sweet onions, and dill, left to cool before refrigerating). That leaves me fairly current with the farm share: I have only an onion, two scallions, a head of radicchio, and some dill to tide me over until Wednesday's pickup. I might need to find a farmers market or stop at a farm stand...

Random fact: 160,000 bees must travel 150,000 miles collecting nectar to produce 60 pounds of honey that yields only 1 pound of beeswax. source

Worst-designed data display I've seen in a long time: a USA Today graphic on, um, heat indices. Yeah, heat indices. Right.

Trader Joe's notes:
  • new ice cream flavor: lemon-ginger, with bits of lemon zest and ginger snap. The lemon is at the forefront, the ginger at the end; I might up the heat by adding bits of candied ginger.
  • a spice grinder with a flower pepper mix, including rose petals, calendula, lavender, and cornflowers; I haven't tried it yet, but couldn't resist it (there were three other interesting mixes in grinders, all with a South African hechsher, one sea salt, one sugar-chocolate-coffee bits, one herb mix).
  • in the freezer case: chunks of fresh (well, frozen, but not canned) albacore for $2.99/lb
