On the hurricane and politics, Hyounpark and Hrafn say it better than I can, so I'll just point you there.

I broke a rule of mine last night. Somehow FJ's photos weren't enough to remind me that not only was yesterday September 1, it was move-in day, and not just for students. (All my friends who moved this summer were excellent in not having it on the worst day of the year.) I forgot, and found myself Butcherie-bound in gobs of traffic. Many instance of stopping despite right of way, slowing for the green light, refusing to drive more than 25 mph, and other frustrations. I got to the Butcherie just before the doors were locked, though, so that was good. The bookstore again failed me, being out of both things I wanted. Next week...

And then this morning I turned on the computer to get a recipe online for banana applesauce cake, and my computer showed me a screen I've never seen before, something about American Megatrends (?) Ambios (c) 1999, version 1.30, Celeron. From there, no matter what I do, I end up being told "While initializing device VKD: Windows protection ereror. You need to restart your computer." Which doesn't help. Ack! I'm useless when it comes to figuring things like this out. The timing sucks, of course, with the long weekend coming up. Even if I have to get a new computer (what sort? I don't know. I have no clue. I'm still using a five-year-old eTower 500i; it does (well, did) all I needed, and I'm cheap), I'd really like to be able to get email and my CV off this box (yeah, I know, backups. I don't know how to back up email. The CV I can type in again, if need be; I have hard copies.). Can anyone help me, or point me in a useful direction?
(I have lots more notes about what happens written down; I can type them in if it's useful.)

I should also note that this means all email sent to my home address since last night I haven't read. If you resend it to [samename] at netzero dot net, that would be great. Though that depends on finding a connection somewhere, and the libraries are closed this weekend. So it depends on borrowing a cup of Internet from someone.

Oh, and since I couldn't get to the recipe and I spend a bunch of time trying (unsuccessfully) to get past this, I used up my morning cooking time, so nothing is started except for the bread dough. It'll happen, it always does, though I suspect I'll end up simplifying the food...

On the more positive side, yesterday morning I put up the shelves in the back hallway that I had to take down years ago to allow access to the trapdoor to the roof (so we could shovel off all the snow from that freak April 1 blizzard years ago. (Yeah, it's been that long.)). Not only that, but put things on the shelves, and cleared the area up some, too. It's much more useful, and more aesthetic, and there's less cluttering my kitchen, too.
