I went out to Watertown this afternoon, for the last day that Paper and Provisions is open there. It was scary inside, reminding me of Wordsworth on the last day they were open, a few things on the shelves, but mostly looking plundered. I asked for the flour I'd called and reserved on Tuesday, and found that they didn't have it: someone else had scavenged it for their order. The guy there was really apologetic about it, too, though it wasn't his fault. So Ceo, I have no flour for you, either. On the plus side, I got a recommendation of where to go instead: Savage & Co., Elm St., Waltham, 781-893-6600. Apparently they're a baking supply place. (Ceo, if I find 50-lb bags of King Arthur white, I'll pick one up for you.)

After the flour disappointment, I wasn't surprised by the rest. No foil pans of the size I use most, no (3-lb) cans of pumpkin or chickpeas, no (7-lb) container of marzipan. Most of the paper goods were already gone, too. Luckily they did have yeast, so I didn't go away completely empty-handed.

And of course, while I was there, I had to go around the corner to Russo's. I browsed the plants, promising myself a return trip when I've got more time to think about flowers, then went in. And as usual, I was swept away in a vegetable dream. I got rabe, and baby bok choi, and portobellos. And oyster mushrooms, partly because they were gorgeous, and partly because they were raised on a farm in Paxton! How cool. I resisted buying fresh almonds (with the green fuzz on them), because I still haven't internalized anything I'd do with them (yes, I could Google after the fact, but that didn't seem to make a difference), though it would be neat to get some.

And now I'm home, and finally cooking, and there's food that's appealing (unlike yesterday). Yay!
