I ended up going to the senior thesis performance last night. It was early enough that it didn't make sense to go home and then head out again, so instead I went to Wellesley College to walk around Lake Waban.

I had time at Brandeis to stop in at the new student center. Not enough time to explore as I'd want, but enough to look around the central area. It's all very smooth surfaces, sleek and new-looking.

Now that the ice on the Charles has melted, there are curves of ever-changing reflections of light and shadow from the river's surface on the underside of the arches of the bridge spanning it.

Having a cold in Doha: a catarrh in Qatar.

There was a story in the paper (from today's Globe) about a girl who has gotten back home four years after being kidnapped by a neighbor. She left aged 11, returns at 15... as the mother of two kids. I wonder how she's going to reintegrate into her family, into her old yet completely changed life. I wonder how things worked that she was able to contact authorities now, not previously. I wonder what her life was like for those "lost years." It's not like those will ever get to fade, with her children there to remind her of it all. Two births before she's sixteen... And her parents are happy to have her back, but will have to learn this reasonably new person (and their grandchildren). There must be sadness mixed in, that she's changed in ways they don't care for/wouldn't have chosen for her. How do all the mundane things get worked out? School, having enough space in the house, stuff like that. There's so much plot in there. I wish I had more ability to turn this into a story.

I stopped at Russo's on the way home, and got quite a lot of veggies. I didn't have a particular list to stick to, and I may have overbought...

So, in an attempt to make sure they don't age too much, the current ideas for preparing them:

Roast the three huge beets in foil.
Sautee the beet greens with onions (now that I have a new 10-lb bag of onions :-).
Carmelize some onions, then make them into sweet potato soup flavored with fresh sage (no idea why I thought of that).
Roast the parsnips with carrots and onions and fresh rosemary.
Make another tray of roasted potatoes and onions with rosemary.
Lots of salad to get through both red and green leaf lettuces, with the tomatoes and scallions.
More caramelized onions, then add baby bok choy and salmon, with a sweet/soy/spicy sauce, and some scallions (not sure where that came from, either).
No definite plans for the mushrooms or garlic, though the latter may enhance some of the roasted veggies.

I'd not been having enough veggies recently, obviously.
