I don't know who exactly came up with the idea of a family reunion, one of the California cousins, I think. And the location was suggested by cousins from D.C., who apparently have a holiday there every summer. The house rentals in the Outer Banks run Sat urday to Saturday, so I decided Sunday to Friday would be the best my mom could get me to agree to...

Just got an email: the Cambridge/Somerville eruv is getting closer to completion, with construction already in progress. R. Klapper will be giving a shiur (class) on the laws of eruvin next Shabbat, even. I can't quite believe it's so close.
I'll be able to bring keys, water, tissues, etc, with me.
I'll be able to invite people with little kids for meals.
I can take people up on offers to bring something, with none of the dropping-off-Friday-afternoon coordinating of schedule.
How weird it will feel. Good, though.

Improvisational lunch: a red and an almost-purple tomato, cubed. Some chives picked from my window. A bit of leftover roll crumbled to bits. Some splashes of balsamic vinegar. A bit of shredded cheddar (feta would've been better, but I don't have any here). Assemble in bowl. Eat. :-)

A bird surprised me last night; the cut seems to have healed already.

I have not been around much lately: a long-distance friend called me at work to schedule a phone call later; we've been playing tag for at least 2 weeks. I need to stop over-booking (right after I get this list of things done....).

Thanks again to Queue for taking week 9, and the pictures thereof.

This week, there was a box, fully packed, and a bag. Tons of stuff, including:

a big bunch of red mustard greens
a big bunch of multi-colored swiss chard
a big bunch of "some kind of choi," an Asian green of some sort (pac choi, perhaps)
a medium head of a green lettuce
a medium head of red-leaf lettuce
a big bunch (10) of red radishes, with their greens
a thin light purple Asian eggplant
a big regular dark purple eggplant
9 tomatoes, of a variety of shades, including a yellow one, and some purplish ones
4 green peppers, a couple just starting to turn colors
a cucumber
a wow-it-smells-ripe-right-now cantaloupe

Lots of loot... hope I get through it all....

Porch update: the plants are thirsty in this hot, humid weather. Nothing much else of interest.

[Addendum 8/14: the farm newsletter lists some of the kinds of heirloom tomatoes we're getting: black krim ("greenish-black shoulders and a smoky purple-red body color"), great white (aka white wonder, which is actually a light yellow tomato), carmello, german johnson, and valencia (an orange kind). The seeds came from a variety of sources.]
