Winter farm share, distribution 1 of 11

I got a winter share from the same farm as the summer share (Stone Soup Farm); there are 11 pickups that are mostly every other week.

• three pounds of purple-top turnips
  
• three pounds of carrots
  
• four small yellow onions
  
• four heads of garlic
  
• one large butternut squash
  
• a large bunch of leeks
  
• a medium head of cauliflower
  
• a medium head of cabbage
  
• a bag (about three quarters of a pound) of mixed salad greens
  
• a head of lettuce (I chose red leaf)
  
• a small bunch of kale
  
• some jalapenos from the take-what-you-want herbs and hot peppers

First thoughts: butternut soup, maybe with tahini; roasted root veggies; mashed neeps (possibly with potatoes, and possibly then turned into colcannon); kale salad; chicken cooked with a medley of veggies.

I made butternut squash soup and it fell a little flat for me; maybe I'll see about blending in some tahina instead of peanut butter...

I seem to only buy super chunky peanut butter, to tahina as a smooth seed butter is useful. (Also, it emulsifies really nicely pretty easily; I mix it with some lemon juice (and sometimes water) to make a dressing for kale salad that I really like, yet it's just that simple.)

I have had some soups that didn't feel rounded enough; I never know whether I should be adding umami, or salt, or fat, or something else.
