Dance camp
May. 9th, 2014 07:21 pmLast weekend, I went to LCFD's semi-annual dance camp, in Woodstock CT. I was the other adult brought by single-dad friend L to help with childcare for his small, O.
The memorable parts:
The memorable parts:
- "Fodder?"
"Yes, O."
"What doin'?"
"I'm driving the car, O. What are you doing?"
[no answer]
Lather, rinse, repeat almost ad nauseum in the car, but the pronunciation of father got me every time.
(My suggested answer, by the end of the weekend: "I'm answering your question, O.") - One of the campers who came from CA brought stuff with him to make bubbles, BIG bubbles (as O. repeated, happily chasing bubbles at least as big as himself, sometimes trying to pop them with his face (I have no idea why.)). They were beautiful, especially when a gaggle* of them floated through the pine trees that were still the only trees showing color (spring is slow this year).
* perhaps a collective noun of bubbles should be a "float"? - I managed to not put the memory card into my camera, despite recharging the battery, so no photos. And I grabbed the wrong ricotta container from the fridge, so I had plain ricotta, not the refried beans I'd planned to bring (luckily, still had two other dishes, since the only food I can rely on there is cereal and salad bar, basically). And I managed to misplace my favorite crochet hook in the car on the drive out (found Sunday morning, but it was distracting, the frustration about it).
- I danced Friday night and Shabbat, mostly contra, a little bit of English country dance, and one session of techno contra (for these purposes, this means "contra dancing to current pop songs"). I was particularly pleased that my suggestion of a Scissor Sister song (about not dancing :-) was used.
I realized that the terminology in English is different enough than that used in contra that it felt a lot more challenging. Still, movement felt good. - The band this time was Perpetual eMotion, and they were great.
- I saw lots of people I see only there (some despite being local. ::sigh::), and it was good to catch up.
- Saturday evening's variety show and fancy dress dancing was fun, as usual, though I continue to fail to do much dress up myself (I was proud I'd gotten my stuff into a backpack, a cooler, and a stuff sack; not much room for serious costumage).
- No late night dancing Saturday night, but I did play my first three games of Rummikub (winning the last one). Plus I made new name buttons. (These sound like they shouldn't go together, and they don't, really, but were at the same table.)
- Peepers can be loud.
- I realized that I wasn't as ok as I thought I'd be with live music + dancing during sfirah after all, so delayed havdalah until after the last dance Saturday night, and didn't dance at all on Sunday (mostly spending the day not in the hall with the music, either).
- I didn't sleep particularly well, unused to the sounds of other people in a room with me, especially when one is a somewhat congested small. Interestingly, the CPAP in the cabin was very soothing, like quiet waves. Always good to get back to my own bed, though.
