I am so far behind in theater posts. More to come.

Last week I ushered for Company One's production of She Kills Monsters (Qui Nguyen> at the BCA. For me, it was a fun, nostalgic romp through a D&D campaign, though there was a weightier side as well.

The show is about Agnes, a rather boring, average young woman who tries to understand her younger sister Tilly, killed with their parents in a car accident, by playing a module/campaign her sister had written. The campaign included a quest for a soul, a paladin, bugbears, a demon queen, cheerleader succubi, a gelatinous cube, and more. As the adventure unfolds, the parallels and contrasts with Tilly's high school life become clearer.

It's the first time in a long while I've been to a show with a curtain (and the only time I've seen a curtain rigged up in that space. It was to good purpose, allowing the intro shadow puppetry to work nicely. And the use of interesting costumes and puppets worked well throughout. The original set, a bedroom, slowly was taken apart to become the landscape of the campaign. The lights helped with this, and the music did as well, some of it putting it in the 90s, all of it working together to make a solid, coherent whole.

There were a lot of funny moments, as well as breaking the fourth wall, particularly with people in the front row. I enjoyed this a lot.
