Short stuff
Nov. 16th, 2012 03:51 pmI walked to Arlington last night, and on the way, discovered a school of alewife painted on the sidewalk between Cambridge and Somerville, crossing Alewife Brook.
I've finally seen Snow White & the Huntsman, which had some pretty, but oh my, so not a good movie: too many inconsistencies (costuming, plot, pretty much anything you can imagine), plus some of the worst hair I've seen in a very long time. And I was distracted by their naming the evil stepmother Ravenna, since this is an actual city in Italy, so I wasn't thinking of birds, as apparently they'd intended. All of this did make it easily snarked, however, which is good for non-movie-theater viewings with people who appreciate it.
I went to the supermarket that's closing tomorrow, and while there are many things completely gone, there are still a few things left. Some are just-haven't-been-bought-yet, and then there's someone's bad idea for a food product: cinnamon-raisin hummus. Two great tastes that don't belong anywhere near each other.
Food notes:
* An eggplant from last Sunday's farmers' market inspired me to a sort of casserole layering sauteed eggplant, potato, and onion with some fresh oregano, olives, tomato sauce, and ricotta.
* Also experimental: baked spicy corn-onion pancake. This probably would have been better in a wider pan, but still was pretty good.
* There was free 'light dinner' before the community beit midrash. Interestingly, the mediocre plain pizza and uninspired salad were better once I put the salad on the pizza.
* I opened a jar of the sweet cinnamon-lemon carrot pickles I made a couple of months ago, and they were completely satisfying. I went looking for pickled lemon recipes, but all I could find was preserved lemon, and Indian pickled lemon recipes, which are a far cry from pickles in vinegar. I think I might do a batch of just the lemons....
* Tonight's experiment: onion, potato, carrot, raisin, and cranberry with leftover pickle juice from the aforementioned pickles, all under a couple of chicken thighs topped with apple-carrot chutney.

A NYC Kickstarter for pedal-powered phone recharging stations, the charge cycle.
A conversation between two friends had me thinking how cool it would have been to have Penrose tiling in the bathroom (except that I know it just wouldn't have gotten done). {Side note: introducing two friends who have great conversation immediately is extremely satisfying.}
