Night market
Apr. 1st, 2012 04:36 pmLast night I went to the Night Market, the first time I made it to one. I'm not sure how many trucks there usually are (or whether there is a 'usually'), but last night there were five U-Hauls rented for the evening and fitted up in different ways. One was a taco stand, offering a variety of tacos with a dash of stripper pole dance. One was a cupcake glory hole, different kinds of bite-sized cupcakes with different condiments. One had tea lights and a percussive installation that had lovely metallic tones and lights when struck. One was a mini-theater of stand-up comedy, which amused me also because there was a microphone there as an apparently necessary prop (the humor varied; some of it was funny, some not at all to my taste). And my favorite was the last truck, which I wasn't sure was open for a while, being so dark, and without a line. The slide-up door was half-way up, with two openings in the fabric that blocked the rest. I don't like small doorways, especially when wearing a full Camelbak, but I went in, crawling to the back of the truck, then climbing partway up a ladder to walk over to a hole in the top of a large rectangular box. I climbed down, into the ball pit below (feeling a bit odd to have my shoes on), which was padded below with something like a futon. I'm not sure why it was so much fun to hang out chatting with a friend there, but iit was, until we had to leave so other people could come in; the ball pit fit two or maybe three people max, lying down because of the height. Of course, I didn't manage to keep all the balls in the pit as I got out, but there was still space in the truck for them to roll around in, so I tossed them back before exiting the truck.
It wasn't that cold last night, but after hanging around outside for a number of hours, I was chilled, and my toes didn't warm up until I was home and under a blanket (perhaps I had been too optimistic, wearing sandals), but I was glad I went. I'm curious what the next one might include. (And though I don't think I'm up for running a truck, I wouldn't mind helping someone else with theirs.)
