When ducks rule the earth!
You know you just went to Firefly/Burning Man when........ the night has too much illumination, yet not enough wonder.
Ethical kosher meat; if only I could afford it. (I'm not contending that the prices don't reflect costs and such, just that I can't justify the premium right now.)
If the House of Representatives had the same demographics as the US as a whole.
An art project focusing on vanishing alphabets.
What I think of as tutu lights, also useful for temporary illumination of chapeaux.
I know it's not the same as Calvin's father forgetting to pay the gravity bill, but that's what I thought of first when I read this abstract on the variability of gravity in NH.
Boston locals: there's a series of Wednesday evening lectures on science in the news (free, but requires registration).
For non-locals: there are videos of previous lectures in their archives.
Also in Boston tomorrow night: the Zebbler Encanti Experience is releasing an EP, with a party at the Wonder Bar in Allston.
I started playing a free online game called The Night Circus, which is somewhat steampunk [Google's spellcheck doesn't know recognize "steamupnk"; fascinating] choose-your-own-adventure-ish, yet amusing, partly for the artifacts (a Piece of Dresden Lace, an Interest in Clockwork, a Memory of Play), partly to see what can happen, a sense of wonder through the text. It does have possibilities that remain locked until I get others to play, so while it is free, if you're interested in meandering through, I'd appreciate the chance to send you an invite (It requires a FB or Twitter account, so this is for my FB friends....)
This year's Burning Man theme was Rites of Passage, and except for the innermost street, which is always Esplanade, the streets are alphabetical in the theme. This year's streets were Anniversary, Birthday, Coming Out, Divorce, Engagement, Funeral, Graduation, Hajj, Initiation, Journey, Kindergarten, and Liminal (which is very cool, but bothered me due to being an adjective when all the others are nouns). Which got me thinking about other rites of passage, not just milestones, in a variety of communities, such as baptism, bar/bat mitzvah, birth, circumcision, commencement, communion, driver's license, hazing, marriage, naming, quinceaƱera, rumspringa, russefeiring, samskaras, and walkabout.
