I got a last-minute invitation out to dinner on Shabbat. My host was waiting in the lobby to let me into the building.

Host: "Shabbat shalom!"
Me: "How about... chag sameach?"
Host: "But would already be isru chag!"
Me: "No, the Clauser Rav arrives at midnight, so the day lasts until midnight."
Host: "..."
Host: "And even were it the day after, it's still Boxing Day, making it a two-day yom tov!"

With apologies for lack of Jew-speak translation. Let me know if I should bother.

Well, if we have to be immersed in their holiday, we may as well be cleverly silly about it. :)

12 Days of Yom Tov.

And we're so smug about 8....

Ah, but my impression is that functionally only the first day is yom tov, while all the rest are chol ha-moed...

If they're serious about it, the last day is also Yom Tov (Epiphany).

Surely New Year's Day is something special, though? Like Lag B'Omer, perhaps?

Is New Year's special on the liturgical calendar, though, other than being Saint Sylvester's day? Every day has its saint.

See my comment below. Male birth on 25 December, count the day of the birth, add seven more days.....

Of course, it's a lot more likely that the birth was around one of the chagim, and December 25 was elected after the fact so that pagan holidays could be incorporated...

I guess you could also throw something in about the feast of the circumcision...
