The Birthday Party
Apr. 7th, 2009 10:27 amHRDC is putting on The Birthday Party (Harold Pinter), and I saw the Sunday evening show. It felt cramped even before the play started, with the seats very close to the stage (with lots of unused space behind the seats). And that feeling of being too close, intruded upon, continued through the show, as Meg bothers Stanley to get out of bed, then Goldberg and McCann flatter or menace everyone else, and Stanley is first powerful then brow-beaten.
I'm still not sure what to take away from this show, other than not staying in odd seaside resorts run by ditzes who notice nothing out of the ordinary. Are Goldberg and McCann there to get Stanley back into the mob? To get revenge for something he did long ago? Are they sane? Is Stanley? The show closes with those three gone, Meg not knowing, Lulu possibly knocked up, and pretty much nothing resolved. I'm not sure why this has the stature it does.
