Actually, -ista isn't generally feminine. It's via Spanish and Latin from the Greek "-ιστης" which also gives us "-ist" via French "-iste". (You may have known that already.)

I didn't know the etymology already, so thank you. I think it's just that it looks feminine, which makes me want to back-construct a masculine form (yes, even though English is far less gendered than French, say, or Hebrew).

It is (well, it's gender neutral). It just looks feminine to me. And I'm sure that when I became aware of the word, it kept being used to refer to women didn't help.
