A while back (more than six months, I think), I got a very basic sewing machine, the kind designed for newbies who are somewhat clueless (which, despite a couple of intricate junior high school home ec projects, I am). It had taken a long while to get to the point of buying the darned thing, and then it sat in the corner of the living room, waiting. For today, as it turned out. The directions/diagrams were reasonably clear (threading a sewing machine has never been intuitive for me), and I hacked up a dead sheet to have some scrap fabric to play with. I don't know why I have a tendency towards pockets, but that's what I made (if one were being very kind, one might call it a clutch, I suppose), and not quite even because I was just eyeballing things. It's not particularly pretty (even after painting dotted squiggles on it), but I have sewn! And threaded. And filled the bobbin. And now understand how to use a threader thingie.
Now to figure out things like where the end of black thread is hiding (I tried all the things that have worked for my crochet thread, and still nothing), and how to measure and cut accurately (perhaps a rotary cutter would be better, but that requires getting something to put underneath), and how to follow a pattern (I have some that are supposed to be simple. I also have patterns for the classic Trek crew, because how could I pass that up?). It feels... a bit daunting.
