My cousin sent me a wonderful link: a tutorial of how to make Sierpinski carpet cookies.

I just got a block of Cabot kosher cheddar cheese, and I'm amused that the label says "Kosher Dairy for Passover only when accompanied by OU hologram," partly because the whole run was designated kosher for Passover from the start, and partly because, well, holograms on cheese! I'm looking forward to tasting a cheddar aged this long, but at this point, it's not going to be until I've turned the kitchen over for Passover.

I tried some of the Hammer gels that I was excited about because they're kosher certified. The orange is orange-y, but a medicinal sort of orange. The raspberry is much better (I'm not surprised: that was the box that was mostly sold out). Still untried: vanilla. The texture is interesting, with a mouth feel that's sort of starchy, even though it's a gel (and not a solid gel either). I think they're going to be useful when bike riding, so I don't have to chew to get calories, yet they feel more substantial than a liquid.
(Note to self: if wearing the Vest of Many Pockets, put partly-consumed packets in the upper pockets, not the lower ones. I didn't think it'd leak that much... and making the housekeys chametzdik is a first.)

Earlier in the week I was jonesing for fleishigs, which is what lead to yesterday's and today's one-pot meals combining ground turkey with vegetables. Yesterday, it was garlic, summer squash and baby peas, along with some tomato bread, tomato sauce, and the end of the olive spread. Today it was garlic, sweet potatoes, and cauliflower, along with cumin, ginger, cayenne, and some V8. Not necessarily food I'd feed guests, but I'm craving protein less now.

Those fractal cookies are cute! Yummy-looking, too. I don't so much like the third iteration, though. The process is like the millefiori technique.

Did you order the cheese from Cabot or purchase it at a local shop?

Such gels that are also KLP could be useful for the frequently-falls-over-Pesach Boston Marathon.

How do you know when you are craving protein? What is it that you experience?

I hadn't thought about millefiori, but you're so right. (Now, if only I were dedicated enough to futz around with cookies...)

The Cabot cheese was part of a group order, that actually came in a week or two ago. I know of at least two group orders that went in, one coordinated by someone who also coordinates orders from Kosheritalia (free shipping for orders over $75, so group orders make sense).

The gels are certified by the cRc, but there was nothing about their Pesach status on them, so they're not. In fact, they've got maltodextrin in them, which I think is chametzdik. Any idea what kosher runners do for energy during the marathon? I assume oranges aren't enough... (I'm particularly interested because I'm considering a couple of long rides during chol hamoed, and I have no clue what to bring with me to eat.)

This time, I kept wanting meat, though I felt that fish would have been acceptable, had I bought some. Tofu felt like it would stave off the need a bit too, but cheese was Right Out: too fatty when I wanted leaner stuff. I'd think of something I wanted to make to eat, and it would be fleishig. Or I'd think of ingredients to buy, and it would include meat. Or I'd want to go out to dinner, and get lots of meat (not to the exclusion of green veggies, but enough to eat a lot of meat).
I upped the miles I've ridden on the bike this week, and I think that increases my protein needs, which has been tricky as I've been 'eating down the fridge' before Pesach....

The futzing does look to be fun.

Thanks for the cheese information. Wish I had the funds to order a case. How would one store it so it would last? I wonder whether any shops are carrying it. Enjoy yours!

Hmm, apple juice in juice boxes? I've seen those KLP. Perhaps also candy fruit slices? When riding you have a few more options than when running.

Ah, thank you for the good explanation about the protein cravings. And well done on the bike riding!

Have a lovely Shabbat.

DH and I bought 2 cases of the Cabot sharp cheddar and have been enjoying it. It's the best kosher cheddar I've encountered so far.

Two cases! Wow. Now I'm looking forward to opening my one piece even more. (And perhaps there will be more group orders; there's no way I could store that much cheese long enough.)

We did give some of it away, but we bought a lot b/c DH and I do like cheese. And since my son won't drink milk, I have to get calcium into him somehow. :)

I like cheese (far too much, I have to admit, looking at the excessive amount of me). I didn't like milk growing up (still don't drink it, to be honest), but my mom didn't worry (too much? I've not really asked) because I ate cheese, yogurt, and leafy greens. I hope your son finds his way to lots of calcium :-)

Did you see the link on the cookie page to the fractal pizza? :) Add some Romanesco broccoli, and you could have an entire meal of fractal foods!

I did check out the fractal pizza, though I admit that after the cookies, I was hoping for a more visually fractal, rather than conceptually fractal, pizza.

Mmmm... fractal dinner! I suppose it would be apropos to all be named Julia for the meal, too.
