Friday was the last delivery of the winter share extension onto the regular farm share. The timing was really tight this time: I could pick up starting at 2:30 from the distribution point in Harvard Square, and had to be out in Worcester by the beginning of Shabbat, around 4.

Work surprised me by letting us go extra early on Friday (we have Monday off; I wasn't expecting an early release day on the Friday before as well), which made things much easier. I went home, got in the already-packed car, and drove to Harvard Square to circle for parking... which I found at the end of my first circuit, around the back of the block where the distribution was. Score!

That meant I was too early to get my veggies, but the guys from the farm were already unloading the truck, so I offered to help, which they were happy to accept. Win-win for me: helping them and getting my veggies faster. Plus, as it turned out, not a bad upper-body weights session, either. I hadn't realized that carrying a 50-lb bag of flour over one shoulder is much, much easier than carrying a tray of 40 pounds of carrots held in front of me... Another plus: loading my bulk order directly into my car. The sad part: there weren't enough butternut squashes after all, so none of those were included in the bulk order (small silver lining: less to schlep up to my apartment, bushel by bushel). Oh, and hitting my head a couple of times on the truck's rear mirror wasn't too smart either.

I collected the rest of the share, drove home, borrowed half of the pickup/dropoff spot in front of the florist's long enough to bring three loads of veggies up, then dashed out to Worcester.

Or so I'd planned. I left Cambridge right at 3, and it's about an hour drive at usual highway speeds. I was thinking that 3 is earlier than most people leave, so it would be pretty easy. I was very wrong: it was 3 on the Friday before the long holiday weekend, and everyone was heading somewhere. Traffic was slow, very slow. I got closer, and it got later. I stressed, rather. In the end, I made it towards the end of the 18 minutes. I dashed in, asked my parents whether the fridge light was off, ripped the tags off some gifts, and lit candles. It took a while until the adrenaline rush subsided, though.

The bounty:
  • two pounds of onions (choose among red onions, yellow onions, and shallots)
  • two pounds of potatoes (fingerling purple potatoes)
  • a butternut squash
  • a head of cabbage (green or purple, which tended to be a bit smaller)
  • six dried cayenne peppers (win!)
  • three baby bok choi, plus enough mesclun added to that to total a quarter pound (I don't think it was a half pound))
  • two heads of garlic
  • three pounds of carrots
  • three pounds of sweet potatoes

I was a bit surprised at what wasn't there (beets, parsnips, rutabagas, turnips), but this plus what bulk veggies I have will last a while.

A few links:

There's a Vegetable Orchestra! (Photos of some instruments here.)

A very interesting interview with Kim Stanley Robinson about terraforming and sustainability and permaculture, among other things. Which lead to reading other interesting posts, such as the idea of a city of retroactive mathematics, and a discussion of how archiving requirements influence architecture. Actually, it looks like bldg_blog is an RSS feed already. Excellent.

This eco foodie tour of Costa Rica sounds amazing, but not feasible for the kosher consumer (in both senses of the word). Alas.

An intresting post about the fantasy of being thin. Much food for thought for me.

Random art: Carhenge, in that bastion of randomness known as... Nebraska.

Check out the 3rd (currently) link down: http://tasoc.org/framesgal.html "Shoe Fleur". Apparently there's a book. ;-) I'll have to check out the vegetable orchestra...

Oh, very nice shoes!

The link above it, fiber and found things and such also looked interesting, though in a rather different way.

My stepmother is the director of the art school. If you want to go to any of the shows let me know. ;-)

Thanks!

I admit, I haven't made it down to NY/NJ in a long while; not sure whether I'll manage to make it down to any of those shows :-(.

I like the idea of the vegetable orchestra. I did listen to the sound cuts, quite jungle like.

I have to admit I haven't listened to the pieces they have up; my computer is a fossil. Next time I'm at a friend's with a better system than mine, though.
