What does "The American Dream" mean to you?

Ooh I know this one. It's where an annoying guy with a fake smile and a sharp suit sells you a plasticky looking house and a shiny silver Lexus (or perhaps a Hummer*) and your tousled-haired son plays quarterback** for the high school football team and anyone can be President.

*Or perhaps a Ford Super-Doody or a Toyota end-of-year event, but there's definitely a large motor vehicle involved.

**It may be only one of the many positions on a football team, but it's the only one that matters.

Nothing about one's daughter or spouse?! And a vacation home would be nice.

Hm. The supposed idea that anyone in America can be successful, if they work hard?

This sounds like you don't believe in this idea... Does that mean that the American Dream is untrue, or is morphing to mean something else?

(I'm not saying I think that it is still true for everyone, or not true; I'm more interested in how you think about it.)

I believe that the American dream, as I have phrased it, can work; but the problem is that there is no guarantee of success just because someone works hard.

Opportunity.

Does that lead to the conclusion that those who lack have made their own problems, since they have the opportunity to do more/better/change?

Nope. Unfortunately, not all dreams are realized. :-(

(You did say "dream", not "reality". In this context, a dream is something to aspire to.)
