Morning commute notes
Dec. 18th, 2007 10:20 amThe turkey was out in Kendall, looking a bit thinner than he used to be.
Longfellow Bridge was uncleared yesterday. I slogged over on the sidewalk, deciding that I would walk in the street today, despite there being less car space. But lo and behold, it was cleared today... sort of: something had plowed it to mostly level, but not down to pavement, so it was a mostly level sheet of ice. I used it anyway.
I slid once on the bridge, scraping my pinkie on the railing (I'd overheated, so the mittens were off). It still hurts.
Whatever plowed the bridge left tracks on either side like ribs of a long ago snake (or perhaps a Chinese dragon?), slowly wearing away in places.
Signs of the commercial season: there aren't just 50-60% off signs in some store windows on Newbury Street, but there was also a sign by the place to get parking stubs (in lieu of meters at each space; no idea what noun is correct for this) that for the holiday season, the mayor was giving people two hours of free parking on Saturdays (and free on Sundays, as usual). It screams of desperation to me.
