Last farmers' market of 2007
Nov. 20th, 2007 04:10 pmThe Copley farmers' market runs later than most, until the Tuesday before the Day of Obligatory Turkey. So of course I had to go buy produce, for my Thursday meal and to support the people standing out for hours in the overcast cold, who have provided me with lovely things through the year. I'd intended to get apples, but somehow that morphed into apples, celery, and Brussels sprouts. At least I was able to keep myself from getting anything else, though I was sore tempted by Siena Farms' bags of bulk veggies. (They're offering a farm share next year, and if I weren't so happy with Red Fire, I'd consider getting theirs; they consistently have beautiful produce, plus are very nice people.)
I was impressed to see not only the usual fall suspects, but peppers, lettuces, mesclun, and raspberries (!). Not what I'd expect in mid-November.
The place I got apples from had Delicious, as well as other, more reliably wonderful, kinds. I decided to try one, and it's much better than a supermarket version, in that it's juicy and crunchy, not at all mealy. Unfortunately, the skin is rather tough, and it lacks any real flavor. Years ago I remember eating Delicious apples with taste; what happened to that? In any case, this was my last chance for Delicious. I'll stick with apples that are delicious, instead :-).

Date: 2007-11-21 04:14 pm (UTC)Given that I got the farm share Friday, and Boston Organics will be arriving today, I suspect I won't need anything else from the farmer's market...
I couldn't bring myself to get any of the raspberries, unfortunately. (I didn't think they'd survive bringing them home.)
