Bridge notes
Oct. 16th, 2007 09:56 amThis morning there was a painter under the tree on the Kendall side of the bridge. His canvas was mostly the bridge coming towards the viewer, with a little of the river off to the left.
I noticed black cable ties along the bottom of the railing, and looked over to find that they are indeed holding up cables along the outside of the bridge, and there's mesh over the stone as well. I assume this has to do with refurbishing the bridge, rather like the cement patches on the sidewalk last week (poorly done patches, with all sorts of glops of cement left around).
I don't know why people were more talkative today, but I got two random "g'morning!"s as I crossed the bridge. Maybe it was my sun hat? In any case, it makes the morning nicer.
Thursday I started counting bike riders between Inman (the intersection of Hampshire and Cambridge Sts., to be precise) and the Charles/MGH rotary. (No, I don't know why; I do know that as a kid I used to count dogs.) Last week's drizzly weather kept numbers low (52, 47; also likely because of varying start times), but this week's cool yet sunny weather means more people on bikes. Yesterday, it was 103, and today, 115. I've read that 5% of Cantabrigians commute by bike...
