ASL can be written in "SignWriting" as seen at signwriting.org - "Peace" can be seen at http://www.signwriting.org/cards/peace/index.html .

Welsh! If I'm figuring my parts of speech right on the online dictionaries, I think it's "hedd".

I have The Joy of Signing (which has earned me some odd looks because people don't always read carefully after the S... :-), which has peace in it, but it looked too complicated to copy with the hand motions.

I looked at the link Rikchik gave, and I don't really understand how it relates to ASL. Might be possible to copy.

Signwriting is a way to write the motions of signs in a standardized way.

My copy of A Concise Dictionary of Minnesota Ojibwe has bangan "it is peaceful" or bengang "something peaceful" but nothing for the concept itself.

I found a Klingon dictionary in the BPL. Actually, more than one. No Elvish ones, however.

OK, I admit, I haven't painted that one yet. But someone has pointed out the utter absurdity of peace for a people portrayed as utterly warlike.

Interesting. Sounds like Ojibwe peace must be in a context. I think the first one is closer to the concept I intend.

There's a concise dictionary of Minnesota Ojibwe?! Wow.

Irish Gaelic - síocháin

Scottish Gaelic - sídh

Have you seen this (http://www.enviroscan.com/html/world_peace.html)? :)

Oh, on that list they have another word for peace in Scottish Gaelic. I'm not sure what's going on there, but I'm no expert of Gaelic (not yet anyway), so you'd have to flip a coin, I think.

I'm relatively certain that sídh is correct.

Also, the Scots word, 'pace'? No one uses that. They do say peace with a Scots accent, but it doesn't sound like pace.
There are legit Scots words, but I think peace isn't one of them. :)

According to our dictionary, it's maluhia in Hawaiʻian ("Peace, quiet, security, tranquillity, serenity; safety; solemn awe and stillness that reigned during some of the ancient taboo ceremonies; peaceful, restful"). Also, have you looked at the transwiki links at the bottom of the Wikipedia page for Peace? (Click edit, then scroll to the bottom of the edit box.)

Thank you.

Ooh, I hadn't! My Google-fu must be weak.

And I recognize a bunch of them :-). Though I disagree with their listing for Yiddish; based on the Yiddish dictionaries I checked, it would look like the Hebrew (different vowels, though), not the Germanic fridn.

I have some glyph (I want to say it's Kanji, but really, I don't know) for Japanese. (I must have been typing too fast, to have left it off the list...) Now I know how to pronounce it. Unless there are multiple words that are possible?

Yay for the Hawai'ian! (All they had at the BPL was a Hawai'ian-English dictionary, not the other direction.)

I hadn't know about the transwiki links. Thanks for the pointer!

I've found more than one word (different dictionaries) for peace in a couple of languages. I haven't decided whether just to use them all or flip a coin.

('pace' is already on, since it's one of the other Romance languages.)

Heiwa works too; it's really a matter of which connotation you're going for. "Kyuui" signifies tranquility, an aura of peace; "heiwa" from what I understand, is more of a social term, and implies societal harmony. Come to think of it, you're right; that may be a better word for magid's purposes.

My Japanese is pretty poor, all things considered, so don't take my word for much. :)

I can put up the two we've been discussing:
ImageHeiwa (平和), peace/harmony. Characters are "even harmony".
ImageKyuui(休意), peace/tranquility. Characters are "rest mind".
