I thought I'd take the T this morning, given the rain, but when I walked outside it was very light, so I walked after all. I had a hood and a hat with a brim, and my glasses were still covered in raindrops by halfway there.

The westbound block on Broadway in front of the Volpe Center is closed off for construction, so the traffic coming off the bridge was backed up enormously as everyone detoured right onto Third (already to the pepperpots on the bridge). One of the two traffic cops directing the cars told me to go just as the other started traffic in my path. No, thanks, I'll wait.

I had an odd sense of power as I walked past all the waiting cars, the power of knowledge. I know I would always rather know why the delay on the road/ train/ plane, and I could tell any of them, if they but asked. No one did.

Crossing the river I saw the first duck tours of the season, out on this rainy, mizzly, gray day. And a busload of kids smiled and waved, which made me smile as I waved back.

Alert for Burdick's addicts: they're closing the Harvard Square store May 14 for renovations. The sign did not indicate an expected reopening date.

I hadn't walked down Church Street in a while: the sidewalk on the theater side is completely changed (for that block only). It's concrete instead of brick, and three times as wide. Minuses: less historic look, loss of parking spaces on that side of the street. Pluses: smooth surface, plenty of room to pass even when there's a line for the theater.

Yesterday's blast from the past: I was heading for the sinks in the ladies' room at work when the woman applying makeup asked me my name. When I replied with my first name, she asked for my last name, then said that she thought it was me: she's the younger sister of a classmate from PCS, my school from first through eighth grade. She was in my brother's class, and asked after him, too. I wouldn't have recognized her in a million years, so I was impressed.
