Among other things brought to a birthday potluck this weekend: a vegan chocolate cake for a gingerbread lover. Which is to say, I used the usual vegan chocolate cake, doubled, and made some changes, adding a lot of powdered ginger, some nutmeg and cinnamon, and chocolate chips (if I'd had crystallized ginger bits, I might have added them as well). I also used half the usual amount of sugar, replacing it with some honey and molasses. I didn't add vanilla extract.

Medical annoyances, of which there are three.
1. I got a pap smear Friday, and was told that results are taking about a month. This is too long. If something is wrong, it should be dealt with quickly. I'm not expecting bad news (but then, who is?), but it shouldn't take that long to know for sure.
2. I got a refill of a regular prescription. As in previous years, it's a 3-month prescription with 3 refills, to take me until my next physical. Except that when I got to the pharmacy, I was told that the insurance company will only allow pills enough for the month. According to the pharmacist, this is another way to convince me to use their mail-order drug system. I know it's more convenient (read: cost effective) for them, but it's a nuisance for me, plus I'd rather deal with my local and knowledgeable pharmacy. I'm willing to pay a bit more for that, but it is ridiculous that they'd interfere with the duration of the prescription (meaning I'll be at the pharmacy every month, rather than every three months; luckily it's on my commute).
3. I did something to my knee yesterday, making stairs a challenge, and walking a bit of a nuisance. I hope it heals quickly; it's very inconvenient just now.
Edit, 1700 The wonkiness in my knee has worked itself out. Huzzah!
The Globe is having a photo contest, for amateur photos taken in New England this year.
Weekend surprises: a triangular sailboat (with pencil sharpener!), and blue stripey snail mail. I am blessed with thoughtful friends.
