Maybe they're including East Jersey, and treating "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" as two?

Besides, to be really pedantic, four of the "states" are self-described "commonwealths". (KY/MA/PA/VA)

So if we stay with pedantic, 50 states - 4 commonwealths - Alaska - Hawaii = 44 states, and 6.... ? (See discussion above :-)

Wait, or some of those Canadian provinces, maybe?
